Why Buhari Didn’t Attend Burial Of Army Chief, Others– Presidential Aide

The Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Social Media, Lauretta Onochie, has adduced reason for the refusal of the president to attend the Saturday’s burial of late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, and other military officers who died in a plane crash in Kaduna on Friday.

Platinum Post reports that there have been mounting criticisms and condemnations of the President’s decision to shun the burial, which took place at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja.

But in a post on her verified Twitter handle on Sunday, Onochie said for a President to at any funeral or event outside the Villa, the event must have at least 48 hours interval.

The Presidential aide, however, said she was not aware of such rule before it was shared by one Muhammed Yusuf.

” For a President to be at any funeral or event outside the Presidential Villa, the event must have at least 48 hours for intelligence operatives to do surveillance and clearance before the President can go based on the Security report.

” In a case where the COAS and his team died yesterday and had to be buried today, you don’t expect the President to go there where there is no security clearance.

” The minimum time of 48 hours wasn’t met. In insecurity parlance, funeral ceremonies are where politically exposed persons face more risks.

” Security issues and securing the President are not done by emotions or sentiments. There’re laid down procedures that must be followed. Be enlightened. ”

Nigeria is a federal republic currently under a strong presidential administration, a National Assembly made up of 2 chambers— a Senate and a House of Representatives— and a judiciary. It has 36 administrative divisions known as states. Each of the states is divided into local governments. Thus, Nigeria has 3 tiers of government: national, state, and local.

Nigeria emerged from British colonial rule with a multi-party system deemed essential to democratic governance. However, those political parties were not differentiated or distinguished from each other by any political or economic ideology. Rather, they were essentially ethnic and regionally based and were preoccupied with promoting ethnic and regional interests.

The politics of ethnic and regional security play a key role in Nigeria’s political and economic development as well as its role in Africa and the world in general. It is the major source of the growing political crisis in Nigeria. It undermines the selection of responsible and responsive national leadership by politicizing ethnicity.

Professor Francisca Aladejana, a former Provost of College of Education, Ikere Ekiti, now Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science, and Technology, has died.

Prof Aladejana, who was a Special Adviser on Basic, Secondary, and Vocational/Technical Education to Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State until his death, reportedly slumped in her office on Monday and died.

On Monday morning, she was believed to have arrived at her office as usual, but later slumped while on the phone.

Professor Ado Ekiti, the late head of the Ekiti State Universal Basic Education Board, was a native of Ekiti (SUBEB).

Rep: Tribalism among lawmakers will make impeaching Buhari difficult

Sergius Ogun, lawmaker representing Esan north-east/south-east federal constituency of Edo state, says the national assembly will not garner enough signatures to effect the impeachment of the president.
Owing to the security challenges, some Nigerians have called on the national assembly to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari.

The latest coming from Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, spokesperson of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), who said the president’s failure to protect the citizens of the country is an impeachable offence.
“In the last six months, two years, what has the president done differently to secure the country? Absolutely nothing has been done and yet you see increasing failure of the state to protect citizens,” he had said

Reacting to the call for the president’s impeachment, Ogun, while speaking with Arise TV on Monday, said tribalism will hinder the process at the national assembly.

“I don’t think we are going to get enough signatures to impeach the president anytime soon. We tried that in the eighth assembly and I, personally, signed. But we didn’t have enough signatures,” the lawmaker said.

“And I said a colleague of mine said, then, why should he support the impeachment of a Fulani Man or somebody from the north to the advantage of somebody from the south-west. Basically saying he doesn’t like the president but why should he support his impeachment for a Yoruba man to take over. That was the sentiment then and it’s even stronger today. So I don’t think we are going to get any traction there.”

Ogun also said the president resigning is not realistic, adding that there will be a counter-campaign even if he eventually concedes to pressure.

“I don’t think the president will resign, this is Nigeria. If there’s enough pressure for him to resign, you’re going to have people who are going to be paid and mobilised to protest for him to stay. And we don’t need that right now with all the insecurity,” he said.

For the first time in months, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), stepped out together with his wife, Mrs Aisha Buhari, on Thursday, to celebrate this year’s Eid-el Fitr and completion of one-month Ramadan fast.

In a series of photos shared via Buhari’s social media handles, the President and the First Lady were seen flanked by their children and their spouses. In separate photos, the President was also seen with lads young enough to be his grandchildren.

Buhari, in a string of tweets, congratulated all Muslims on the occasion of this year’s Eid festival and prayed that it will bring with it peace, safety, security, brotherhood and love amongst others.

The retired major general also stressed on “unity and solidarity among all citizens, Muslims and Christians are imperative especially at a time when our country is faced with multiple challenges which are surmountable only when we come together as one”.

Today marked the first time the President and the First Lady were seen together in public or in photos.

The PUNCHhad earlier reported that Mrs Buhari left the Presidential Villa, Abuja, for Dubai in September 2020 and stayed there for about six months before she quietly returned to the country in March 2021.

The First Lady’s aides claimed she had gone to Dubai for medical treatment but Mrs Buhari, whom many have described as a fearless and outspoken critic of her husband’s government, especially on the matter of insecurity, has been at loggerheads with the President’s aides and close relatives in recent time.

In 2019, she accused the President’s nephew, Mamman Daura, of hijacking the Presidency, adding that the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, had even issued statements on behalf of the President without his knowledge but based on instructions from Daura.

In 2020, passions reached a climax when security aides to a relative and Personal Assistant to the President, Tunde Sabiu, fired shots inside the Presidential Villa during an altercation with Aisha’s aides.

The PUNCHhad also reported that the President sent out birthday wishes to at least over six notable Nigerians in February 2021 but did not wish his wife, who attained the milestone age of 50, a happy birthday on February 17, 2021.

The President was also not present at the public presentation of the biography of Mrs Aisha at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on April 8, 2021.

The First Lady had launched a book, titled, ‘Aisha Buhari: Being Different’, which was written by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Administration and Women Affairs, Dr Hajo Sani.

The President, who was in London for medical check-up at the time, did not speak virtually during the launch and his aides didn’t issue any statement recognising the feat by Mrs Buhari, leaving many to wonder if the relationship between the first couple have gone frosty.

Buhari mourns late Chadian President, Idriss Deby

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed sadness over the sudden and tragic death of Chadian President, Idriss Deby, on the front line, fighting against rebel soldiers.
The Street Journal had earlier reported that President Deby died on the frontline while battling rebels from Libya that have been troubling the Sahel country.

Reacting to the incident on Tuesday, President Buhari said, “I’m deeply shocked and devastated by the sudden death of Idriss Deby on the battlefront to defend the sovereignty of his country.”

The President, in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu in Abuja, further said, “The late Deby had played a very active role in our regional joint collaboration in the military campaign against the Boko Haram terrorists.”

Buhari described thatChadian leader as a friend of Nigeria who had enthusiastically lent his hand in our efforts to defeat the murderous Boko Haram terrorists that have posed grave security challenges not only for Nigeria but also our African neighbours, particularly Chad, Cameroon and the Niger Republic.

“The death of Deby will surely create a big vacuum in the efforts to jointly confront the Boko Haram terrorists and the Islamic State West Africa Province, ” the statement said.
While condoling with the people of Chad and their new leader, President Buhari called for greater collaboration to defeat the terrorists.
